About Our Name
St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) was born into wealth and married a prince—yet she devoted her entire teenage years and tragically brief adulthood to caring for the poor, sick and needy. In her short life, she established a hospital at the foot of the mountain where her castle stood and tended to the sick herself. She built a hospice for the weak and feeble. And she sold all of her clothes and luxurious possessions to aid those who needed help. Near death, Elizabeth was asked what should become of her remaining goods. She replied that anything seeming to be hers belonged to the poor. We at St. Elizabeth Hospital are proud to honor St. Elizabeth and strive to emulate her selfless spirit in all we do.
About Our Tradition
St. Elizabeth Hospital is a 95-bed community hospital in Gonzales, Louisiana. It was purchased by Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, the largest private medical center, in Louisiana in 2000. In December 2004, St. Elizabeth Hospital became the fourth hospital in the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) which also includes Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, and Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette. Our sponsorship by the FMOLHS has provided the means to expand and upgrade the hospital to meet the needs of our growing area. St. Elizabeth Hospital and the sponsored organizations of the FMOLHS strive to create a healing and spiritual presence through service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, and humility and justice for all those entrusted to our care..
